Why U.S. Christians Should Help Secure Freedom for Southern Cameroons: The Case for Independence of Ambazonia

Dr. Tita and Rev. Victor, Friends of Ambazonia

Ambazonia refers to the lands, territorial waters and airspace in the Gulf of Guinea pertaining to the former British Southern Cameroons, whose boundaries are set out and internationally recognized in the United Nations Trusteeship Agreement of Dec. 13, 1946, and in the League of Nations British Mandate of July 20, 1922, and protected under Article 4(b) of the African Union Constitutive Act.

Ambazonia is neither part of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea nor the Republic of Cameroon as obtained during their independence on Jan. 1, 1960.

Christians have seen an increase in religious persecution in recent years, from kidnapping and torture in Nigeria, Syria, Somalia and North Korea. According to Open Doors’ 2025 World Watch List, Cameroon is listed at No. 43. Christians from a small tip in northern Cameroon are being persecuted by Boko Haram, and the 80% of Christians in Southern Cameroons are being targeted by an oppressive government that does not want to recognize a free Ambazonia.

Southern Cameroonian Christians can only be protected when the United States recognizes a free Ambazonia, a country whose independence was granted by Britain and recognized by the United States, the United Nations and the African Union.

Southern Cameroons’ voices must be heard, and U.S. Christians must join us in our fight against the torture of our brothers and sisters in Christ. Let freedom ring.
