Vice President Harris vs. President Trump Polling Snapshot

In the latest round of polls, Vice President Kamala Harris shows a slight bump against former President Donald Trump. However, history prompts the question, is this bump sustainable?

Analyzing recent polling data, Harris is competitive, often neck-and-neck with Trump. Here's a snapshot of the numbers:

  • RCP Average (7/5 - 7/23): Trump +1.6

  • NPR/PBS/Marist (7/22): Trump +1

  • Reuters/Ipsos (7/22 - 7/23): Harris +2

  • Quinnipiac (7/19 - 7/21): Trump +2

  • Morning Consult (7/21 - 7/22): Trump +2

  • Yahoo News (7/19 - 7/22): Tie

  • Forbes/HarrisX (7/19 - 7/21): Trump +6

  • CBS News (7/16 - 7/18): Trump +3

  • Reuters/Ipsos (7/15 - 7/16): Tie

  • FOX News (7/7 - 7/10): Trump +1

  • NBC News (7/7 - 7/9): Trump +2

  • Emerson (7/7 - 7/8): Trump +6

  • ABC News/Wash Post (7/5 - 7/9): Harris +2

These numbers suggest even as President Biden exits the presidential race, the contest remains close. Harris leads in a few polls, ties in some, but generally trails behind Trump in several others. This mixed bag raises the critical question, can Harris sustain and build on this momentum?

Historically, Harris' campaign struggles in 2020 cannot be ignored. Despite early enthusiasm, her presidential bid failed to gain traction, culminating in a disappointing performance in Iowa. This historical context is crucial for understanding the challenges ahead. The ability to convert early polling leads into sustained campaign strength is an area where Harris has previously faltered.

The current political climate is different, and Harris' role as Vice President provides her with a higher profile and more substantial platform than her previous campaign. However, the dynamics of American politics remain unpredictable. For Harris to maintain and expand her lead, she will need to address key issues decisively, connect with a broad base of voters particularly in rust belt battleground states that have shown a displeasure for the Bide-Harris economy and border policy.
