Ty Townsend Faces Uphill Battle to Save Navy Contract After Floods, But His Workshop Becomes a Center for Renewal

FLAT ROCK, N.C., Oct. 22, 2024 – In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, small business owners like Ty Townsend are still struggling to rebuild. Townsend, owner of Top Tier Fabrication, saw his livelihood nearly wiped out when floods from the hurricane destroyed his equipment. However, his workshop has since transformed into a hub for hope and renewal in the community.

Despite the challenges, Townsend remains focused on recovery efforts. Following the flood, his shop became a staging ground for distributing food, propane, and water to local residents. Townsend and a group of volunteers, dubbed “The Goon Squad,” cleared roads, helped neighbors, and provided essential supplies.

His welding and plasma cutting machines—critical to his business—were severely damaged. Townsend is now working to repair or replace this equipment to fulfill a vital contract with the U.S. Navy. The contract, which involves providing parts for desalination equipment, is the important for his business and family’s livelihood. Without functional machines, Townsend risks losing it.

The Navy has given him two months to replace the damaged plasma cutter, or they will seek another supplier. “That equipment is our bread and butter,” Townsend said. “It’s what keeps us going.”

Amid the difficulties, there have been bright spots. Michael Furick, of Furick Cups, a leader in the welding industry, offered to replace Townsend’s lost consumables and provide a new welding helmet. Townsend described Furick as “a man with a heart of gold” who has been a source of encouragement during these tough times.

As Townsend fights to save his Navy contract and rebuild his business, his resilience is a beacon of hope for the community. “Getting my shop running isn’t just about saving my business—it’s about helping others rebuild too,” he said. Once his shop is fully operational, Townsend is committed to offering jobs to others in the community who lost their livelihoods due to the disaster. “I want to provide jobs for those who are struggling right now, giving them a chance to get back on their feet,” Townsend said.
