Just before Thanksgiving, in a ceremony that garnered little attention, President Joe Biden awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Cecile Richards, the former president of Planned Parenthood. Richards led the organization for 12 years, from 2006 to 2018—a tenure during which Planned Parenthood reported performing approximately 3.5 million abortions, based on its own publicly available annual reports.

The numbers are staggering. On average, Planned Parenthood performed between 320,000 and 330,000 abortions annually during Richards’ leadership. These figures represent lives lost and families forever changed, yet Richards remains unapologetic about what many describe as a “death culture” that has seeped into societal norms under the guise of euphemisms like “reproductive rights” and “abortion is health care.”

Richards, who revealed earlier this year that she is battling glioblastoma, a deadly brain cancer, continues to champion abortion access with the same fervor she demonstrated during her tenure at Planned Parenthood. In a September 2024 social media post from the Democratic National Committee, Richards celebrated the efforts of her new organization, Chat with Charley, a chatbot designed to help women access abortions.

“Since its launch in 2023, more than 35,000 users have turned to Charley for support,” Richards wrote, proudly touting another grim milestone—35,000 more lives lost to abortion.

While BPALiveWire wishes Richards a miraculous recovery from her illness and prays for her healing, we also pray for a transformation of her heart. We hope she will one day reckon with the devastating legacy she has left behind—millions of innocent lives ended and countless mothers and fathers left in despair.

President Biden, in awarding Richards the nation’s highest civilian honor, described her as “a leader of utmost character” whose work advanced “equality, justice, and freedom.” At BPALiveWire, we are committed to attacking policy not people, but can such virtues be ascribed to someone whose policies contributed to the destruction of so many lives?

Richards’ Medal of Freedom is a sobering reminder of how far our nation has drifted from the fundamental principles of life and liberty. Even as we critique Richards’ record, we continue to pray for her health and that the God of miracles heals her body from glioblastoma and we continue to pray for her heart.  We pray for a spiritual awakening that allows her to recognize the humanity in the lives she once fought to end.
